Reform the traditional competition system! Paris Olympic track and field events will introduce resurrection competition
BEIJING, July 26 (Xinhua) — At the closing of the 2022 Oregon World Track and Field Championships, the world field Federation passed an important reform measure: in the track and field events of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, all individual track events (including hurdles) ranging from 200 meters to 1500 meters will implement the resurrection competition system. According to the competition system of world competitions such as the Olympic Games in the past, players can directly advance to the semi-finals through group ranking in the preliminary matches, while other players can advance to the semi-finals by virtue of the first few best results except those who directly advance to the level. In the upcoming Paris Olympics, the resurrection competition will replace the traditional competition system. After the resurrection competition is introduced, the players can still make progress to the semi-finals by virtue of the group ranking, while the rest of the players need to participate in the resurrection competition to decide the remaining semi-finals. It is worth mentioning that the 100-meter project will no longer set up the resurrection race because there is still a primary race before the preliminary round. However, the recovery time of project athletes with a distance of more than 1500 meters after each competition is relatively long, so there will be no resurrection competition. Sebastian Ko, the chairman of the World Association of Athletics, said: “After consulting retransmission providers and athletes, we believe that the innovation in this competition system will bring more straightforward promotion opportunities for athletes, it will also ensure that track and field events enjoy full exposure at the peak of the Olympic Games. We will carefully study the schedule to ensure that every project can fully enjoy the spotlight of the Olympic Games.”
