IOC President Bach praised the Yao AO council for promoting gender equality
Xinhua News Agency, Manama, October 30 (reporter Wang Haizhou) a gender equality seminar hosted by the Asian Olympic Council (hereinafter referred to as the Yao AO Council) opened on 30th in Manama, the capital of Bahrain, representatives from 42 countries and regions held discussions on issues such as gender equality, sports solidarity and grassroots strategies.
This seminar aims to focus on the role of national and regional Olympic committees in promoting gender equality, so as to ensure and enhance women’s participation and representation in all aspects of sports, and further introduce relevant grass-roots strategies.
Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee, praised the Yao AO council for setting an example in vigorously promoting gender equality in Asia in his video speech at the opening ceremony. “Through this seminar, the Yao AO Council sent a strong message leading by example, indicating that you are committed to promoting gender equality in Asia.”
Zhang Hong, a member of the International Olympic Committee and China’s first gold medal winner of speed skating in the Winter Olympics, attended this seminar on behalf of the Chinese Olympic Committee. In an interview with Xinhua News Agency, Zhang Hong said that in recent years, international sports organizations have emphasized the diversity of sports events, including gender equality, equality of five continents and equality of sports events, these changes have begun to be reflected in the Olympic Games.
“As the representative of the Chinese Olympic Committee in this conference, as a former female professional athlete, I have been engaged in sports for 23 years. Olympic Games and sports have brought me the greatest gains in my life. No matter male or female athletes, we are all responsible for the next generation of young people and should lead the younger generation to challenge themselves and build dreams through sports. In the future, I am willing to gather more strength with my Olympic experience and my working experience in international sports organizations to encourage more young people to pursue and realize their dreams.” Zhang Hong said.
Yao AO acting president of the Council Raja landir Singh promised in his opening speech that in promoting and developing Asian women’s sports, each national and regional Olympic Committee will be supported by the Yao AO Council.
According to the introduction, according to the Olympic 2020+5 agenda of the International Olympic Committee and its specific goal of gender equality, the Yao AO Council is striving to achieve gender equality in Asian sports, and strive to achieve gender balance in the leadership of sports organizations.
