Q: Why should we build China’s Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame?

Basketball has been introduced to China for 127 years, during which a large number of outstanding figures emerged. Unfortunately, due to the faults and debts in the historical inheritance and cultural construction of Chinese basketball, teenagers have limited knowledge of Chinese basketball history and culture, let alone receive education and encouragement. Building China’s Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is an urgent need to develop basketball in the new era. We hope that the Hall of Fame can lead the construction of Chinese basketball culture, inherit the history of basketball, carry forward the spirit of struggle, unite the consensus of the industry, and become an important means to deal with the current severe challenges, and the important steps to enhance the core competitiveness of Chinese basketball.

China’s Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Construction advocates the basketball field, especially the vast youth groups including national team athletes, to review and learn from the accumulation of several generations of Chinese basketball players to win honor for the country, give priority to me, the concept of taking the development path of basketball with Chinese characteristics, as well as creativity and successful experience of being proactive, daring to explore and adjusting measures to local conditions. We expect a new generation of basketball players to enhance cultural confidence and shoulder historical responsibilities and missions.

Q: What are the basic considerations of the Hall of Fame recommendation mechanism?

A: Hall of Fame recommendation activities have strong industry attributes and need to reflect the cognition and orientation of most people in the industry. Therefore, “people’s public opinion, industry recognition, the 12 words of industry consensus” are the foothold of designing the recommendation mechanism of Hall of Fame. Based on this, three links of “nomination”, “recommendation” and “final review” are set in the mechanism, which are respectively selected by a committee composed of basketball professional organizations or practitioners.

For example, the 30-person nomination list is the recommendation result of 100 professional organizations in the basketball field included by the “nomination committee”, which is extensive, professional and authoritative. We respect this result.

Q: What is the recommendation standard for Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in China in 2022?

A: In 2022, China Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame recommended from two sequences, namely, outstanding athletes and coaches.

I. Outstanding athletes

(I) retired for more than 5 years (including 5 years) and have any of the following conditions: join the team to represent China in the world or intercontinental competition; with the team to participate in the national competition finals, or the top league finals hosted by the Chinese Basketball Association; Won the title of top League regular season or finals MVP.

2. Outstanding coaches

(1) have been teaching for more than 20 years (including 20 years) and have any of the following conditions: as the head coach led the team to represent China in the world or intercontinental competition; As the head coach led the team to participate in the national competition finals, or the top league finals hosted by the Chinese Basketball Association; Won the title of top league excellent coach.

One of the reasons why some outstanding contributors failed to enter the nomination list is that they did not meet the recommendation criteria. For example, Miao Lijie and Chen Nan, who were discussed more, both returned to the National Games in 2017 and retired for less than five years at the beginning of the recommendation activity in 2022, thus they failed to enter the “list of recommended people”.

A: in the development process of Chinese basketball for more than 100 years, many predecessors have made great contributions to Chinese basketball, but they are not well known to contemporary people. In order to pay tribute to these predecessors and convey the collective recognition of tradition and glory of the Chinese basketball family, 15 predecessors such as Zhang Boling were specially recommended to enter the hall directly.

“Five and ten heroes” is the result of the selection of the Chinese Basketball Association in this important period of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, and it is a major event in the history of Chinese basketball honor, as a title, as a whole, “five and ten heroes of basketball in New China” has been remembered and spread as the Honor symbol of Chinese basketball.

In line with the principle that cultural construction comes down in one continuous line, and the inheritance and continuation of the honor system to avoid splitting the history, after deliberation and recommendation by the China Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Committee, as an outstanding collective, the members of the “Five and Ten Heroes” will continue to participate in the recommendation activities of the Hall of Fame in 2022 and in the future.

Q: how can some candidates who have made great contributions to Chinese basketball and are not well-known to the public enter the Hall?

A: Considering that there are faults in Chinese basketball culture and that basketball people in some special fields are not well known to everyone. In the setting of recommendation mechanism, the Hall of Fame committee has “special nomination right” and can add the nominees after Deloitte submits the nomination list.

Q: Why didn’t there be other sequences such as referees in China’s Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022?

A: Among the “special tribute figures” who directly entered the Hall of Fame, Mr. Shu Hong was the “Olympic first whistle” of basketball, and Mr. song Junfu was one of the earliest international referees in China, mr. Mou Zuoyun is also the first batch of National Basketball Referees in new China. The Hall of Fame is the highest hall of honor for Chinese basketball, and there must be a few people who can enter the hall.
